The County Assessor’s Office is responsible for valuing “all real and personal property annually as of January 1.” We utilize a staff of 12 to accomplish this task, as Muskogee County has 49,000 real property parcels and 5,609 personal accounts to be valued each year. Using the assessments provided by the Assessor’s office, the County Treasurer can issue annual tax statements to property owners. The Ad Valorem taxes that are collected are used to fund county government, such as the courthouse, sheriff’s office, county jail, etc. Contrary to popular belief, no property taxes are used for county roads and bridges. Other entities that are funded by property taxes are schools, technical schools, libraries, EMS, the county health department, and other entities.
